From Start to Finish

Gelateria del Teatro

Giolitti's

Gelato for Brunch and gelato for dinner!  Yes!  I ate gelato two times in one day.  This is either a new high, or a new low...Admittedly, the second time (with a much bigger portion with crema and a cookie) ellicited a bit of guil---but it was a short-lived feeling.

This morning, after Mass at Santissima Trinita dei Pellegrini, which was amazing as always, we decided to forgo pizze this weekend (sigh) and head home---of course, we both knew that our route would take us past Gelateria del Teatro...to rosemary, honey, lemon gelato with a side of white chocolate gelato. Awesome, superb, incredible! How many more days do I have??!  It was closer to 12 and we were already hot and hungry so it seemed the sensible thing to do.

Later, since it is Grandpa's last couple of days, we knew he needed to get to Giolitti's.  We'd walked and walked (on Sundays the whole area from the Coleseum to Vittorio Emmanuele Monument is a pedestrian walk-so fun!)-all through the Foro Romano, around the V E Monument, up the Aracoeli steps (the was a bride walking up with her Father and bodyguards!), around the Capitoline, through the Ghetto, over to the Gesu and then almost to the Spanish steps (plus a detour to the suburbs because we took the wrong bus-whoops and had to re-group on a metro from way far out!)  Whew.  When Grandpa said he wanted gelato, we knew we couldn't risk not having Fatamorgana open.  Hard to believe, but our "homing instincts" to Giolitti's did not kick in until we'd asked at a newstand (which G and I are such chickens to do!).  All of a sudden we KNEW we were close.  It was a fun, new expereince because we ate in the old dining area (where we never could get into in the winter)--very civilized!  I had fig (as figgy and yummy as the last time at Giolitti's in Testaccio) and walnut (a little strong, not my fav, I ate it anyway to get to the fig).  Then we walked a long way to a subway and home.  It may sould like I am justifying this over consumption  of gelato, but I'm just sayin' that we did do a lot of walking and did not eat much else all day...la de dah.
