Life Lessons-Homework is good

If I wait one more day, I will have too much to say about gelato.  You see, we have lots of homework to do because we are on a mission to discern (haha, that is a fancy way to say we have given up worrying about being FAT) which gelato is the best in Rome.  It is hard work, but someone has to be up to the task. We are! Of course, we have bothered to read lots of recs from well-known and respected food bloggers, but we are not willing to trust them just based on their writing.  NO.  Field research, the actual nitty gritty WORK is very important.

To aid us on our project,  one of the highlights of this trip was to find out that Fatamorgana, a highly touted gelateria, is mere steps (!!!!) from our apartment.  Oh the JOY.  And the danger.  We have shown amazing self-control (actually we've wanted to give equal time to other gelaterias, but whatever) and have not gone everyday, or twice a day.  That is good necessary because it is important to our research that we maintain some sort of umm distance from our subjects.  No photos of this fantastic locale or product yet because I was so happy to find Fatamorgana that I didn't even take a picture (hey, we've only been twice-very little, perfect scoops).  So, you will have to trust me-the basil, honey and walnut is to-die-for!!!!  G had it the first day and I was begging for more tastes.   The best.  Killer.  Gotta have more. I forgot what I had the first time, good but not like that.  So I got it the second time and  G got the lavander, rose petal one and it was awesome too. Now I am craving that.  Pictures to follow-whoops gotta go back.

BUT, then we got the tip off that Gelateria Teatro is wonderful (the owner/gelato creator is another student of a famous gelato guy just like Fatamorgana who was also an apprentice at the same place).   And so it is!!  Wondeful.  And not too bustling and in a cute place and best of all, they are friendly!  We took Dad there for his first gelato-and what a foray into gelato!!!!  Again, i forget what my companions had becasue mine was just SO GOOD!!!!  I had white peach and lavender and their basil rendition (good, but not Fatamorgana).  But the peach, oh! the peach!!!!  Can't wait to go back for the absolute freshness, the hunks of peaches and the pure essence of lavender.  I felt like I was halfway between the Gafney peachoid and the lavender fields of Provence.  Cannot wait to try the other flavors-I hear the Rosemary is top notch.

Today, we decided to go back to an old fav-Old Bridge.  Right across from the Vatican Wall, also close to "home".  It is packed with Italians and tourists alike.  The portions are huge!  The cost is reasonable, especially compared to the "designer scoops and prices" at the other post gelaterias mentioned.  2 Euros will get you a mess of delicious gelato.  Todays pick: Peche (different than Teatros-but very peachy and yummy) and Fior di Latte (my new go to-I had it the other day at Giolitti's when I got Fico.  It was what the counter guy recommended to go with the fig and he was spot on).  G branched out into fruit and got coco, banana and fragola and Dad got pistachio and a really superior amaretti.  Look at their happy faces.

Tomorrow we will do further "research"...stay tuned. Did you know that gelato has 3 times less fat than ice cream?  That makes it practically a healthy food, right?  And with all those fruits and nuts and chocolate...good for you, for sure.  It is frozen at a higher temperature so it uses less electricity so it is a "green food"-isn't that important?  Everything "green" is good.  Like buildings and who cares about buildings...We know a lot more important gelato facts which we'd be happy to share.  But most important is this admonition---- EAT MORE GELATO!!!!  You will be happy you did.
